Affordability and accessibility of housing seen as a strength for Scotland’s financial sector, despite challenges with infrastructure
Financial services industry leaders surveyed highlighted the importance of affordable housing infrastructure to facilitate expansion, social mobility and employee retention. However, issues with housing and infrastructure have been cited as a key bottleneck for the nation’s growth, and in May 2024 the Scottish First Minister John Swinney declared a national housing emergency.[1]
To maintain Scotland’s attractiveness, action is needed to raise the general quality of our inner cities, including the ease, transparency and efficiency of the planning processes, along with sustained investment in infrastructure more generally.
While housing infrastructure has been raised as a challenge to Scotland’s long-term growth, one-third (33%) of survey respondents view the housing stock affordability in major urban centres as an advantage relative to international peers, suggesting that the industry feels the market remains globally competitive.
